Videos from Psychology of Teaching Course

I was introduced to these video resources while taking a Psychology of Teaching course at Indiana University.  I found the information in the videos to be valuable.  I hope you find the videos to be useful on your journey to becoming a better educator.  These videos are not designed to be used with K-12 students in the classroom.

1) Video: Building on What We Know: Cognitive Processing

This video, session 3 on the individual program list Building on What We Know: Cognitive Processing, focuses on how students make sense of new material encountered in the classroom.  The video takes a look at cognitive processing and shows several classrooms that help show things that teachers can do to increase cognitive processing for students.

2) Video: Watch it, Do it, Know it: Cognitive Apprenticeship 

This video shows the idea of cognitive apprenticeship in practice in both a 4th grade classroom setting and a high school classroom setting.

3) Video: Emotions and Learning

This video discusses how emotions affect learning.  The video presents ideas including creating an emotionally safe learning environment and teaching skills needed to manage their feelings to create an emotionally intelligent student. 

4) Video: Teaching Reading: K-2 Workshop 

This video series discusses the challenges of teaching reading to K-2 readers.  The video series is presented in workshop style.  Boston University professor of education Jeanne Paratore leads the eight workshops tackling issues that K-2 teachers will face in the classroom.  The eight workshops topics include:

  • Supporting the English Language Learner
  • Word Study and Fluency
  • Comprehension and Response
  • Teaching Writing as a Process
  • Differentiating Instruction
  • Using Assessment to Guide Instruction

5) Video: Teaching Reading: 3-5 Workshop 

This video series takes participants into the world of a grade 3-5 reading teacher.  The series discusses challenges that these teachers face.  This video series contains 16 half hour videos that include lots of information as well as opportunities to look inside several classrooms.  The workshop topics are:

6) Video: Creating Nurturing Environments (Welcoming Newcomers) 

This video shares strategies for teachers ELL students that are useful to helping ELL students and their families feel welcome and valued within a classroom.

7) Video: Teacher Insights on Assessment 

This video takes about how to improve assessments in a K-4 mathematics classroom setting.
